It all started with a vision of telling enchanting stories about the beauty of this world through dresses.  Armed with a sketchbook and camera the founder of StoryDress, Suzan Meijer traveled the world from India to Vietnam and from Marrakesh to Cairo seeking out inspiration and partners to work with. Meeting the absolute beauty of the world but also being confronted with the harsh reality. The fashion industry is mainly dominated by men, while women were sitting in the back of the room making the most beautiful pieces but not getting the credits or rewards they deserve. It raised the question: What if I would only work with the women?  What if I would put the spotlight on them? What if even women who couldn’t stitch yet were given the chance to learn, allowing them to join the creative process and become the artists behind my collections?

And so, StoryDress was born. It emerged from bare necessity but evolved into a beautiful mission: to empower and celebrate women and give them the helping hand they need out of their circumstances.

We have proudly build beautiful partnerships with women empowerment NGO´s in India, Rajasthan and Egypt, Cairo. They are the heart of each creation. Peru is next on the horizon! Every year we add a new country  to our mission so we can shine the spotlight on as many women as we can. Together we color the world with beautiful pieces made with love and joy by these amazing women. We hope it gives you as much joy wearing them as we had making them. 

Our values:

Every woman working for StoryDress receives a training in tailoring and works in a safe, supportive atelier. The women earn twice the average salary of a man in the same country, which not only gives them financial stability but also a great sense of pride, accomplishment, and independence. Next to financial security, it is the wellbeing and growth of the women that is our top priority. From entrepreneurship training to providing dental care and helping them navigate challenges at home. With this helping hand, these women blossom into powerful, strong women who can provide for themselves. And the empowerment is carried over to their children and communities, creating a ripple effect of change.

The first day I visited the foundation, I was overcome by a wave of happiness and positivity. The women are working at the atelier with great pleasure and are super proud of their work. As they should be! The foundation stands for slow fashion. Every dress made by the Saheli women is made with heart and soul and results in little pieces of colorful art.

It didn’t take long before we got all our ideas together and designed a beautiful collection together. The party began when the textiles came out. We decided to make dresses from up-cycled sarees. These sarees have been worn on special occasions in India, and now we have selected the best ones to give a new life into beautiful dresses.
